Please join us on Friday March 8th at 6:30PM for cocktails and dinner to celebrate our eighth year of operating the Homework Project in Romania in the Epiphany Fellowship Hall.
The 2013 The Homework Project Benefit - A Night in Romania will feature authentic Romanian food and wine, including vegetarian friendly options. Childcare is provided.
This year's event will include program updates from volunteers who traveled to Romania in August 2012. Enjoy the music of Chicago violinist Steve Gibons, of the Gypsy Rhythm project. Since 2005 the Homework Project has raised funds for the education of disadvantaged Roma and Romanian youth in the villages of Cefa and Berechiu Romania. With the launching of a new center in the village of Ateas in January 2012, after school tutoring for approximately 45 children in 3 villages is being provided through the generosity of our donors. The Homework Project was begun as an educational outreach to school-age children in poor, rual Romania by Epiphany United Church of Christ in Chicago. The homework Project offers after-school tutorial assistance, using trained teaches, and also provides the children with a good meal. The program enables students to be prepared for school and as a result, lessens the likelihood they will drop out of the educational system.
At present, The Homework Project is active in three villages on the Western edge of Romania, near the Hungarian border. The centers in Cefa and Berechui reach about 50 children each year. In January 2012, a new Homework Project center opened up in Ateas, Romania serving 15 additional Students. The program operates between September and the end of May. Summer recreational activities are also scheduled.
The program begun by Epiphany has enjoyed a grassroots success, however, there is more to be done. It is hoped that in the coming years, additional centers may be established to provide educational hope for more children. Please peruse our website to understand the mission and how you may become involved. Call or email with any questions.
